On Friday, Stellantis announced plans to halt operations indefinitely in Belvidere, Illinois.
The plant makes Jeep Cherokee SUVs.
The company said it was forced to make the move due to cost increases resulting from the shift to electric vehicles.
According to Reuters, some 1,350 employees will be laid off.
Stellantis says it's possible the plant will never reopen as the company weighs other options.
The United Auto Workers union was "deeply angered" by the decision.
Stellantis said the industry's "most impactful challenge is the increasing cost related to the electrification of the automotive market."
