An 86-year-old Michigan man is nearly done building a 27-foot-long, 4,000 pound streamline car.
He’s hoping it will be ready by August and that it will top 400 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Jim Byerly told a local Fox news station that he’s been working on the vehicle since 1996.
The twin engine vehicle includes features like a cooling system with six heater cores and a drop-down door for releasing two drag chutes.
Byerly said he’s spent $250,000 of his own money on building his Streamliner.
But he won’t be behind the wheel when it hits the Flats. His neighbor Eric Bair, a fellow automotive enthusiast, will be driving.
If Byerly’s Streamliner succeeds in traveling more than 400 miles per hour, it will shatter the previous record for a similar vehicle.
According to the report, the current record of 348 miles per hour was set in 2010.
