An employee is at a tire-recycling facility died this week when he fell into a tire shredder.
26-year-old Byron Jones was killed last Friday at the Genan tire recycling facility near Houston, TX when he fell into a tire shredding machine. According to reports, Jones got stuck in the machine and was unable to free himself. The incident wasn't discovered until co-workers reported him missing.
According to the Houston Chronicle, it was only Jones’ fourth day on the job, and his family's attorney was uncertain of the amount of safety training he had received over the course of his brief stint. The family does plan on filing a lawsuit, hoping to hold any negligent parties accountable for the tragedy.
Jones was married and had a 3-year-old daughter.
According to OSHA, the Denmark-based company has not been cited for accidents in the past.
The company says that it is the largest tire-recycling facility in the world, recycling about 375,000 tires every year. Genan employs more than 230 people worldwide.
IEN reached out to Genan for a statement, but a company spokesperson said the company doesn't have a comment at this time.
