While most saw the arrival of the Navy hospital ship Mercy as a welcome presence in the Port of Los Angeles, there was at least one exception.
According to a report on TaskandPurpose.com, Eduardo Moreno intentionally derailed his train near the Mercy, as he thought it was part of a government takeover.
Nobody was injured after the train crashed through a concrete barrier, a steel blockade and a chain-link fence before sliding through a parking lot. The wrecked locomotive immediately started leaking fuel, but there was no impact on the Mercy.
Moreno hoped the crash would bring more attention to the “alternate purpose” of the vessel. He was quickly apprehended by a California Highway Patrol officer.
He is currently being held by the FBI and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
The Navy hospital ship was docked at the port to help treat non-COVID-19 patients in helping alleviate some of the pressure on local hospitals.
